Involved in a Car Collision? This is What You Have to Do

If you drive frequently, then you know that accidents are a common occurrence on the highways, within the city, when travelling and during the course of your daily commuting. Accidents are a dime a dozen and can be fatal, mild or severe. Whatever the case, if you get involved in a collision, here’s what you should do:

1. Check the State of People Involved

The very first thing to do is check if no one is hurt. This will determine what your next step will be. If someone is hurt, call the police immediately. It is a crime to hit and run or leave someone injured in an accident to his fate. If the accident is fatal and you can move, try what you can to keep anyone alive. In cases of fire, see if you can extricate any of the individuals. If you can, bring them out gently and move them far away from the inferno. Then check to see if they are alive. Lay them down in a position where they are facing upwards and see if they can talk. If they can, ask them simple questions to see if they can still recall things. If the police hasn’t arrived by this time, try to keep them alive. If anyone is bleeding try to tie a tourniquet around the bleeding part. If it is in the limbs, try tying it at the upper part so that the individual will not lose too much blood.

2. File an accident report within 10 days.

This will ensure that you do not get your license suspended. For accidents whose damage assessment is less than a thousand dollars, you should exchange details such as driver’s license numbers, phone numbers et.c. In cases where a domestic animal is hit, you should do all in your best to contact the owner.

3. Contact your car insurance company

There is a reason it is generally advised that all car owners obtain some form of auto insurance and it is that in cases of theft and collision, the insurance company can pay after you make your claims. If the claims are justifiable and proved true, then you will get your benefits. While the insurance may not be able to pay you everything, they can reimburse you to the tune of eight, sometimes ninety percent. That’s at least better than having to scrape up the money for a new car if the car is totalled or pay for the repairs of a slightly damaged car. Therefore, as soon as you can, get in touch with your insurance company and file a claim. This should be attended to before long.

4. What’s Your Status?

This simply means “who was responsible for the collision?”. What were you doing before the accident? What To Do If Your Car Breaks Down

When your car breaks down, it is never a fun experience. It has happened to just about everyone at one time or another. No one wants to be in that situation but there are steps you can take to help you get through it, particularly if you are not a member of an auto club. If you have a membership to an auto club then you simply need to call them for roadside assistance. It is said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Therefore, especially if you have to handle a breakdown yourself, it is best to be prepared. Have everything in your car that you may need if you get stranded somewhere. If possible, the first thing you should do is pull safely over to the side of the road.

- Cell phone: You are never going to appreciate having a cell phone more than you will if your car breaks down. If you have a cell phone you can call a service station and at least get a tow, if possible. If that is not possible, you can at least call someone to pick you up.

- Flashlight: The possibility always exists that your car can break down while you are driving at night. If it does, you will want to have a flashlight handy. – Reflective warning triangles: These will help protect you and your vehicle in case of a breakdown. Once you are over to the side of the road, turn on your hazard lights to alert traffic that may be headed your way.

Once you do this, follow these tips

- Enter and exit your car using the door that is furthest away from traffic.

- Place at least 2 reflective triangles behind your car and one in front of your car. Place the farthest one approximately 50 feet behind your car.

- If possible, move away from the car to make your phone calls and also have your passengers move away from the car.

- Call a tow truck, a ride, or the police. It is only natural to worry about your car but the first priority is your safety and your passengers safety.

Most importantly, dont panic. If you are not in a familiar area or you are travelling and do not know who to call, contact the police. These are very stressful situations and there is no need to try to handle them alone under these conditions. Keep the priorities straight. Ensure the safety of yourself and your passengers first and then the protection of your car. The car can be replaced, a human life cannot.

Roadside assistance is a great thing to have for the fact that it can get you out of a bind when you are traveling. There is nothing more frightening when on the road than breaking down and not having anyone to help you. There are too many instances in which an individual may be traveling and they break down too far away from anyone they know. What happens is they then have to call a towing service to help them and that towing service will charge a lot of money to tow them to a hotel or another destination.

Sure, it is great that towing is available if you need it, but the cost can be so incredibly high. If youre traveling with a limited amount of money, you may find yourself sleeping in your car somewhere because you have to pay the towing fee and you cant afford a hotel. You would be amazed how many people this happens to. Whats said is that this doesnt have to happen at all.

Roadside assistance

If you tend to travel or you are going to be traveling sometime soon, it is important that you look into a good roadside assistance package with towing services. You pay one low fee each month for your roadside assistance. It usually consists of different services, such as tire assistance, battery assistance, lockout service, and someone will bring you gas if you run out of gas. But the towing service can be the best of them all for the fact that there isnt always a fix right there on the side of the road. The car needs to be taken somewhere if it will not run at all.

Instead of you having to call a tow truck and pay them every dime in your pocket, you can call your auto club and tell them what is going on. What they will do is contact a local tow service for you and two you for a certain distance. You have to take a look at your roadside assistance plan to know how far they will tow you. Many of them will tow you up to 50 miles and what is great is you dont have to pay them when they are done. Your roadside assistance service takes care of that for you because youve been paying them monthly anyway. Youve more or less already covered the cost through your membership fee, so you have nothing to worry about when youre on the road.

Should you get it?

If youre still wondering if you should get roadside assistance, you have to ask yourself how you would handle being stranded in a strange place. If you have a wireless phone, you could call information for a towing service, but then you would be stuck with the cost. That is where you ask yourself if you could handle the cost of towing if you had to. You dont want to be one of those individuals who pay large amounts of money to be towed to a hotel lot or a supermarket parking lot so that you can sleep in your car and seek out help the next day. That is simply unacceptable, especially if you dont have to put yourself through that.

So if you dont have a roadside assistance package that includes towing, you need to get one. It is good to be safe than sorry when you are out and about on the road. When it is all said and done, that will be a move that you were glad you made. It is worth the monthly cost to not be stuck somewhere.
