It’s a beautiful summers day and you are driving along without a care. You’ve got your sun-glasses on, the window down and the radio pumping your favourite tunes. Out of the corner of your eye, you spot a woman in her summer best and start singing to yourself: ‘Pretty woman walking down street, pretty woman the kind – then CRASH. BANG. You’ve gone straight into the car in front of you.
While staring, you have managed to rear end the car in front of you. This type of incident is highly common during the summer. Hot blooded men just can’t keep their eyes on the road. Imagine the embarrassment of phoning your insurance company to explain away that one!
Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear has never been one to hold back what he is thinking and last month he decided to give his opinion on the matter. He said ‘People imagine the most dangerous time of the year to drive is November or perhaps February – dark nights, fog, ice’ He continues, saying that ‘Sunny skies, light breezes, girls wearing short skirts, because the thing is, you can’t not look. You can’t physically not look.’
New research into this phenomenon has shown that 29% of drivers of the male variety admitted to being distracted by the ‘Pretty woman’ during summer. The same cannot be said for women drivers where only a very low 3% admitted to being distracted by men. Combine this with stats that show that men made 16.4% more car insurance claims than women and a clear trend emerges. 25% of men said that within the last 5 years they have had a summertime crash or very near miss.
Can you as a man relate to the above situation? I think if we are being honest then we would have to say yes. It is a strange phenomenon but a very real thing too. If we want safer roads then the only solution during the summer is for men to keep their eyes and thoughts on the road. You have plenty of other opportunities to view the ladies outside of the car so don’t risk an embarrasing car crash by letting you eye wander. It is just not worth the hassle, especially if your girlfriend catches you!
